Shape Of Life

Client: Sea Studios

422 illustrates evolution in 3D for Sea Studios and National Geographic

422 was commissioned to art direct and supply computer animation for ‘The Shape of Life’ – a blue chip science series for National Geographic Television via Sea Studios, California.

The 8 x 1 hour programmes rely heavily on 422’s established expertise in stylish illustration of science and natural history themes. The Art Director on the project was Kate Boulton and Cathy Wilkin was Producer.

The premise behind “The Shape Of Life” is that the overwhelming majority of animals are built on the basis of no more that eight body plans – eight ways nature has devised to make an animal. The Shape of Life devotes one hour long program to each of these major groups - its evolution, its workings and the lives of the creatures that belong to it.
The eight groups include:
Sponges
Cnidarians (jellyfish and kin)
Flatworms
Molluscs (snails, Octopuses, squids and other delicacies)
Annelids (earthworms)
Arthropods (insects, spiders, lobsters)
Echinoderms (starfish, sea urchins)
Chordates (fish, birds, humans)

“The Shape of Life” goes behind the scenes to take a probing, playful look at the way life has evolved.

All CGI was created in Maya by a team consisting of 422 animators Andy Budd, Mark Fox and Darren Oakes. Compositing was done on Avid Illusion by Effects Artist/Editor Dave Corfield.
