422 South creates mind blowing graphics for BBC Science

422 South ran a graphics marathon, working over a 4 month period on the BBC Robert Winston series 'The Human Mind'.

The series comprises 3 x one hour programmes looking at specific aspects of the workings of the human mind, entitled Get Smart, Making Friends and Personality.

The project stretched the creative sides of the brains of everyone at 422 South to produce over 30 minutes of content graphics and special effects sequences. This included over twenty 3 dimensional transitions which take the viewer from live action into the deepest parts of the brain, created in Maya by Niall Flinn.

Procedural code had to be written for sequences examining the functions of the brains synapses. The viewer is shown, in a level of detail never seen before, how electrical pulses transfer information. This could not have been achieved for the budget without writing special bespoke code.

The graphics, commissioned by BBC Series Producer Mark Hedgecoe utilised all the facilities at 422 Souths London office as well as David Barlow's specialist film studio in Southampton where different scale models of the brains synapse, built by Hothouse, were filmed.

Mark Hedgecoe said “422 have integrated stunning CGI with live action and models in a truly original way to produce an innovative solution for the series”

The series went out in a 9pm slot on BBC One.
