422 South Brands Inside Out for BBC
422 South has recently completed a series of titles and stings for the re-branding of the BBC current affairs series, Inside Out.
Inside Out is an ongoing series of 30” programmes broadcast throughout all English Regions, with programme content being tailored relevant to each local area. Series Director, Jonathan Bigwood, briefed 422 to enhance the existing text-based logo and develop the branding across all regions without being picture specific.
422 Creative Director, Andrew Hunter, therefore needed to come up with abstract imagery that would reflect the “Inside Out” title of the series.
Andrew worked closely with Rogerio Alves - a specialist in cgi lighting). Together they conceived a glass cube that both reflected and refracted the world around it, therefore reflecting both “inside and out”. Working in Maya and Mental Ray, Rogerio and senior Maya artist Henry Lutman developed a highly refractive and reflective model cube and a successful test animation was quickly approved by the BBC. This provided them with a simple branding solution that could be used cost-effectively across the regions.
The animated titles and stings, were composited in Shake then graded and versioned in Henry.
The new branding went into use on BBC One in early September, with the series currently transmitting on Monday evenings at 7.30pm.
